Sarah aunty's crafts..

I have shared earlier how Sarah Aunty could bring Kippa and Kochini Kippah to us and how she could preserve the culture of Jews in Kochi, India.

Out of curiosity she used to stitch and keep many Kippas; as we are in the street of Mattanchery Synagogue (One of the oldest Jewish Synagogue in the world) we used to get lots of tourists from all over the world. They were interested in these hand made accessories and they started asking it. Sarah aunty handed over those as gifts.

In the meantime demand increased and out of combulsion from she started selling them. When they came to buy Kippas they started asking for Halah covers, guest towels, table covers etc... She started selling handkerchiefs and small cloth items which is made by a convent near by. Sarah Aunty enjoyed the interaction with the tourists, she told them stories and exchanged information, then some day she thought of developing her own style a range of hand embroidered table linens. She started making Halah covers, guest towels, napkins, place-mats etc... And the guests spend more time in our shop and we started getting ides about many more products.

Everyday we are happy to open our shops and welcome the guest, sometimes we get good friends some people buy products others greet us; it is because of the shop that we are all active and Sarah Aunty's smile is enough for people who visits us.

The other side of this story is a hobby and passion is now protecting the lives of around 100 women artisans from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. I have trained 60 women from Andhra Pradesh on the special embroidery and they are making these table linens for us now and another group from Tamil Nadu is making a product for us that I will show you in my next post.

Kochini Kippah

In her school days at the age of 15 – 16, there was an old Jew women called Ramachi Muthi (Muthi means respect word for elderly). She used to stich a special Kippah for the Jews in Kochi and Mattanchery. It has got a special design and an Israel – India cultural blend. Sarah Aunty was sensitive to art and craft, out of curiosity she asked Ramachi Muthi to teach her the “Kochini Kippah”. Sometimes when Sarah Aunty talks about her olden days she tells that Ramachi Muthi was very happy to teach her the stitching. Muthi wished the tradition of Kochini Kippah to be carried and handed over to generations.

Now that I am so glad and fortunate that Sarah Aunty had faith in me to teach the stitching and I could continue the tradition of “Kochini Kippah”. It is always available in our shop with other Kippah and I thank the guests who visits our shop because they are making it alive by using that along with the normal Kippah.

Rest In Peace Dear Reema Aunty

Guests come and go; few touches our heart, few remain in our mind for long, sometimes we talk about them to others. It is so wonderful to meet someone again after few years; and believe me it happens. One of our guests just surprised us last week with a sudden visit.

She was so happy to see the old photos intact in our store

The most wonderful fact was that we had the memories of last visit, few photographs that we took that time was there right on the table. Few minutes of silence then sharing the four years of ours and theirs, some tears and losses, life will not be same always but we move on with the new hands and legs walking on the road along with us.

Sarah Aunty and she looked into the old photo for some time, I thought it was again delightful moments that I loved to keep in our memory and took the below photograph.

We went to Synagogue... and walked down few steps to home
